“Cheap” Viagra

From time to time, there has been reports on the news about people suffering ill effects after taking unlicensed, unverified health products which claim to boost the “virility” and “sexual prowess” of men.

In fact, these illegal products often contain different pharmaceutical compounds. In 2008, 10 people died after taking them for sexual enhancement. Diabetes medications were found in these tablets, resulting in people experiencing low blood sugar, dizziness and fainting, cold sweats and eventually loss of consciousness.

Furthermore because the compounds of the drug are unknown, many have also experienced side effects such as loss of hearing, strokes and extremely painful erections. Not the outcome one would be looking for when wanting to boost their own libido. In fact if left untreated, these painful erections caused by the engorgement of blood can lead to Permanent Impotence.

These illegal products are often bought from street peddlers, online pharmacies or even from other countries with no prior Health Sciences Authority (HSA) Singapore approval. That being said, here are the top 5 reasons why “Cheap” Viagra may end up costing you so much more than just the money you think you might be saving.

1. You can get severe side effects from unknown doses or what is in the drug

The tablet may contain any combination of medicines to boost erections, other medications that may have adverse side effects such as the diabetes medications i described above. Ultimately leading to organ damage and eventually  death.

The main way medications boost erections are by enlarging the blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood to flow in. If these engorgement of blood is not regulated and the blood flow is not reversed after a while, it can lead to priapism (engorgement of blood in the penis), painful erections and ultimately impotency.

Without medical supervision, the penis may eventually have not enough new oxygen from new blood, and after a few hours, critical damage to the penis can start to occur. This is dangerous and is a medical emergency.

2. You could be paying for a dud

Don’t be fooled by catchy packaging names such as King Power, Black Gorilla, Tiger King. Many times, for the sake of selling the tablet, the peddler has no idea what goes into it.

You would be lucky to have avoided an adverse health event, and in this case, have completely no effect at all after taking the tablet. In fact, the scary thing is you might end up taking an additional one or two to get a better effect and end up overdosing on the toxic components of the tablet as well.

3. You have no idea how these drugs are made

Because there is HSA approval of these illegal drugs, there is no guarantee they are made under the proper conditions. This means you might think you are buying a new Ferrari, but after getting the keys, you realize that either there is no engine or that they have given you a Toyota engine instead. Worse still, they could have given you a spoilt ferrari engine, and after driving for 5mins, the engine explodes and you get caught in the explosion.

4. You may not be getting to the root of your problem

You might also think that these sexual enhancement medications may address your poor erections, but instead there are other root causes or even more effective and safer treatments available that need to be addressed. Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome | Andropause

Viagra For Women

Can Women take Viagra?

The short answer is Yes!

What is a more pertinent question is does it work?

To avoid confusion, this article is not about Viagra (Sildenafil) which is commonly prescribed to men for erectile dysfunction. This article is not about Addyi (Flibanserin) which is commonly called the “Female Viagra” but is a completely different product.

Let’s first get into the basic science of what Viagra is and what it does.

Viagra was introduced to much fanfare as the first effective oral treatment for erectile problems in men. What it does is improve blood flow into the penis. Now, we know from embryology that the penis in men and the clitoris in women develop from the same bits of the embryo. Although they are far from identical, they do share certain types of tissue that respond in the same way to Viagra.

So unsurprisingly, studies have shown that when women take Viagra, blood flow to not only the clitoris improves, but also blood flow to the labia minora (inner lips) and also the pelvic floor in general. This better blood flow can lead to more sensitivity and more lubrication in the vagina.

So naturally we also have seen studies that conclude taking Viagra helps in the sexual function of some women. Especially women who suffer from other medical conditions that can reduce the blood flow to the pelvis for example Diabetes.

Are there any side effects?

The potential side effects of taking Viagra are similar in both men and women. The most common side effects were headache, flushing, nausea, blocked and running nose. Either men or women who take certain medicines to treat the heart called Nitrates, cannot take Viagra because the combination of these medicines can cause the blood pressure to fall to dangerous levels.

So what’s the catch?

Going by the above, if Viagra really is such a boon to women’s sexual issues like it is to men’s, why is it not more aggressively marketed and prescribed by Doctors to women?

Well, the catch is women’s sexual issues are usually much more complex. The medical term “Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD)” has only received more research attention since the late 1990’s. Types of FSD can be very generally broken down into 4 categories – Desire, Arousal, Orgasm and Pain. Each category is influenced by a multitude of factors including emotional, psychological and sociocultural in addition to physical factors such as disease.

So it would be logical to conclude that Viagra cannot possibly be the cure all for FSD.

So what now?

There is now a much better understanding by the medical community on women’s sexual function. If a woman finds herself affected by a poor sex-life be it not having any desire, not being able to get sexually aroused, not being able to reach orgasm or feeling pain during sex, she should seek help from her Doctor.

Viagra may be the prescribed treatment. However, there are also many other possible interventions the Doctor can prescribe based on the diagnosis. These could be tablets like Viagra or could also be non-drug based interventions such as cognitive behavioural therapy or mindfulness-based interventions. There are also physical interventions available such as vaginal dilators and biofeedback devices.

FSD is real and it is a complex medical issue with many possible underlying causes.  Do not blame yourself and do not blame your partner. Seek medical help. Women’s Sexual Health Clinic Singapore

Why Mixing Poppers and Viagra is Dangerous

This article does not imply in any way that we condone the use of poppers or any recreational drugs. It is to highlight the dangers of recreational drug use, especially when combined with prescription medicines like Viagra.

Erectile Dysfunction and Viagra, Cialis and Levitra
Around the world, there is an increasing number of people seeking medical help for erectile dysfunction. This has led to an increase in sales of drugs such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra which have been improving the lives of many men affected by the condition. However, there is a smaller population that consume drugs like Viagra recreationally, which has raised concerns and is increasing in consumers.
Viagra has always been coming more popular at “bathhouse” and “house parties. The issue usually arises when consumers start mixing it with other party drugs such as ecstasy, GHB, amphetamine and many more. A more common combination used is Viagra taken with amyl nitrites, which is also known as “poppers”. These days, poppers may consist of assorted alkyl nitrites, mostly isopropyl nitrate and isobutyl nitrate.
Viagra alone, based on its mechanism of action, can cause the blood pressure to drop. Usually, this happens minimally in a young and healthy patient. However, when another blood pressure lowering drug is taken with it, this can cause a further drop in blood pressure. Unfortunately, poppers are one of those drugs and can lead to a deadly drop in blood pressure when consumed with Viagra.

Viagra and Poppers

Besides that, the combination of Viagra and poppers or any drug that lowers inhibitions) have been shown to increase the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease thru a few reasons:

  • Consumers can sustain more and longer sexual encounters. This is why it is common in “Party and Play” which leads to multiple partners
  • Decreased inhibitions which may potentially lead to risky sexual practices
  • Poppers itself dilates blood vessels in the anal canal and along with decreased pain sensation, which allows a person to participate longer in anal intercourse, will potentially result in more bleeding. This will definitely increase the risk of transmitting HIV and STD.

Poppers and Health Risk

It is recommended to avoid taking recreational drugs like Viagra and poppers. These are tips you can follow to prevent yourself from getting into medical problems :
1.) Avoid taking Viagra and poppers together. (If consumed less than 24 hours apart it can lead to a significant drop in blood pressure)
2.) Never ingest Poppers. If you have already done so, please present to an Emergency Department.
3.) If your nose is stuffed, do not forcefully snort. This can cause ear and sinus problems.
4.) Poppers are highly flammable. Unless you have firemen in your room, keep them away from the fire.
5.) Avoid taking Viagra and poppers if you have a heart condition or any other significant medical conditions.
Like I said earlier poppers can cause disinhibition and impair your judgement so remember CONDOMS, CONDOMS and CONDOMS. Do not forget Lube!

Take Care!

We are against the use of any kind of recreational drugs in any form. They are dangerous and can even be deadly. The punishments for using or possessing recreational drugs in Singapore are extremely harsh and may even include the death penalty. DO NOT USE DRUGS.
We also do not condone the use of prescription drugs without a proper and formal consultation with a doctor.
