Cancer Screening Singapore

Caring Since 2005

More than 1 in 3 people will develop cancer in their lifetime. While this seems a daunting statistic, part of the reason is that people are living increasingly longer lives, and the risks of many cancers do increase with age. Moreover, with improved screening rates and quality of testing, people are more likely to discover cancer and get treated earlier, leading to better rates of cure and survival.

While there are many different types of cancers, the most common cancers seen in Singapore are for breast (women), prostate (men), colorectal and lung (both men and women). Cancer screening is available and recommended for various types of cancers, and may include:

  • Blood tests for cancer markers
  • Imaging such as mammogram, ultrasound or CT scans
  • Direct cell microscopy such as pap smears for cervical cancer
  • Endoscopy (e.g. colonoscopy for colon cancer)
  • Genetic screening for familial cancers

Various cancers have different risk factors, so it is important to speak to a doctor who can determine what kind of screening is recommended for you. For instance, smokers may be recommended to do a low-radiation dose CT scan of the chest to look for lung lesions, while patients with a strong family history of certain cancers may need to start screening earlier than the general population.

Cancer screening available through DTAP Clinics:

  • Blood cancer markers – colon, breast, ovarian, pancreas, liver, nasopharyngeal, prostate, testicular/germ-cell cancers, etc.
  • Blood microRNA testing (GastroClear) – gastric cancer
  • Mammogram/US breast – breast cancer
  • Low dose CT chest – lung cancer
  • Pap smear +/- HPV co-test – cervical cancer, anorectal cancer
