Cellulite is an aesthetic concern that at least 85% women face, and it commonly appears on the thighs, buttocks and belly area. At a glance, it may not be obvious, but by manipulating the skin and muscle with your hands, you may see those notorious dimples colloquially known as “orange peel” syndrome.
Cellulite is the appearance of the skin caused by the underlying muscle – it is easily confused with the process of the condition.
Women tend to have cellulite due to the biological structure of their connective tissue. Women’s connective tissue is made up of perpendicular “rubber bands” like an ‘I’, known as the septae, in the hypodermis layer where fat is stored, between the skin (dermis) and muscle. As fat cells expand in each pocket between septae, space in the pocket decreases causing a squeezy environment. This is similar to balloons expanding in a big plastic bag – you would see an uneven surface of the bag. As a result, the septae is stretched upwards, fat cells protrude abnormally within the pockets, and the dimpling effect appears.
Men’s hypodermis, on the other hand, is more resistant to fat cells warping the skin as they have approximately 20% less fat cells and their septae crisscross like an ‘X’.
How Does Cellulite Form?
Though cellulite may be a harmless biological modification, when left untreated can continue to grow and worsen, sometimes causing discomfort. This occurs when the fat cells accumulate and bunch together, they push upwards on the skin while the septae pulls the skin downwards. The cellulite affected area will feel pain and tender when touched.
Besides the superficial dimpling effect, the enlarging of fat cells between the septae can also reduce microcirculation of blood and lymph, possibly leading to intracellular swelling and reduced lymphatic drainage that can cause more fat being stored. The more pronounced and prolonged cellulite is, the more time it will take to remove its cause.
