You say that syphilis can be transmitted skin to skin. But does that include all skin or only mucous membranes. Are women’s breasts mucous membranes?

          Dear John,

          Sorry for the late reply.

Syphilis can be spread through close contact, but that is not that common. Is there is an extra-genital (other than the genitals) ulcer, it can contain the Syphilis bacteria and close skin to skin contact with an infected area can possibly transmit the bacteria. Syphilis is usually spread through sexual contact (oral, vaginal or anal sex) though.

The breast is not considered as a mucous membrane. Mucous membranes are found inside the rectum, vagina, penis, and mouth

If you have any symptoms of syphilis (e.g. a penile ulcer, rash, fever, lymph nodes etc) please do come in for further evaluation.

          Thank you
