HIV Window Period & HIV Test Accuracy
One critical factor that will help your Doctor determine which HIV test is best for you is when your sexual exposure occurred. This is because all HIV tests have what is known as a testing window period. The window period is the time from when a person gets infected to when the test is accurate.
There are no tests that are accurate within the first 10 days from infection.
After 10 days, your doctor will usually recommend an HIV RNA PCR test for HIV screening.
After 28 days, your doctor will usually recommend a 4th Generation HIV Antibody and Antigen test for HIV screening.
After 90 days, your doctor will usually recommend a 3rd Generation HIV Antibody test for HIV screening.
Remember that this is just general information and you will need to get specific advice from your doctor.
