The Stigma
But this hasn’t always been the case. There has always been a stigma of embarrassment and a feeling of inadequacy associated with men’s health or sexual matters.
This was especially so in the 18th to early 20th centuries, where the open discussion of sex was socially repressed in western society.
French historian and philosopher Michel Foucault, author of the thought-provoking and controversial book “The History of Sexuality”, attributed the change in attitudes towards sex during this time period to be a by-product of the rise of capitalism, fervent religion and a bourgeois society.
People then were looking at sex from a scientific and technical point of view, which we all know, can sometimes be jejune and dry.
Liberation of Sexuality
The late 20th and 21st century ensued, and today, we see the resurgence and (partial) liberation of sexuality in modern times. Flip open any men’s or women’s magazine for the modern cosmopolitan individual and there would undoubtedly be multiple columns discussing sexual matters. Today, we approach sexual health from both angles – the scientific method and the social aspect of it.
The term “Andrology” was first proposed in 1951 and “Andrology” has only been studied as a distinct speciality since the late 1960s.
Andrology & Medical Conditions
Andrology deals with issues of the male reproductive system during the course of a man’s life – every time point from development to maturity and senescence.
We can effectively deal with issues such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, infertility, phimosis, urinary issues, male pattern baldness, andropause, and sexually transmitted diseases – anything that can affect a man.
We know how damaging these problems can be to a man’s ego. Do not let your self-esteem get battered.
In this field, it’s not just pathology we are concerned with, it is the quality of life as well.
On one too many occasions have patients come to me with a cough or a non-specific symptom like fatigue, only to subsequently meekly ask for erectile dysfunction medication at the end of the consult (which incidentally is not the only way to treat erectile dysfunction)
Women have their gynaecologist, and men now have their andrologist.
Do not be shy! Come forward, and let’s talk about sex.
