Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

What is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

Men’s Clinic in Singapore (Caring & Treating Since 2005)

ESWT stands for extracorporeal shockwave therapy. Shockwave therapy has been used for decades in the treatment of kidney stones and musculoskeletal problems. These shockwaves are postulated to induce a proinflammatory response, and the body reacts by increasing blood flow and metabolism to the area, resulting in increased healing. In recent times, low-dose ESWT has been increasingly applied to the field of Men’s Health.

Today, we will cover the use of ESWT in 4 areas:

Erectile Dysfunction Treatment with ESWT

With over 4,500 ESWT procedures done, we have successfully helped numerous men overcome erectile dysfunction safely and quickly.

One of the areas in which ESWT has been effectively applied to is in the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse.

Traditionally, the treatment consisted of a combination of lifestyle modification and exercise, controlling cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes and hypertension, and medication.

Medications such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra have significantly improved the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Whilst these medications are effective, they only last for a short time after ingestion, and are not a long-lasting solution. There have been multiple studies and reviews which have shown ESWT works!

The shockwave stimulates the growth of new blood vessels, improves penile blood flow and erectile tissue function. It is effective in patients who are already on medications and can improve a patient’s response to the medications as well. Patients report the effects to be long-lasting, lasting even months to years after a cycle of treatment.

2) Peyronie’s Disease Treatment with ESWT

Another condition which ESWT can be used for is Peyronie’s disease.

Peyronie’s disease is an abnormal curvature of the penis which leads to painful erections.

The curvature is due to scar tissue aggregated in a particular area of the penis. Scar tissue is less able to stretch as compared to normal penile tissue. As the rest of the penis enlarges during an erection, the scar tissue does not.

As a result, the penis erects with an abnormal curve with the scar tissue at the start of the bend. The energy from ESWT can break up the scar tissue over a few treatment sessions, allowing the area to expand like the rest of the penis during an erection.

3) Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS) with ESWT

ESWT can also be used to treat chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS), also known as chronic nonbacterial prostatitis.

In CPSS, patients report long term pelvic pain and urinary symptoms such as pain on the passing of urine. While a good number of people with these symptoms may test positive for a bacterial infection, in CPPS, doctors are unable to find evidence of an infection.

It can affect as many as 6% of men. The shockwaves are thought to hyperstimulate pain receptors and interrupt nerve impulses that carry pain sensation, providing symptomatic relief for the patient in terms of pain and urinary symptoms.

4) Penile Rejuvenation

An interesting use for ESWT has also been identified in penile rejuvenation.

In this area, younger men without erectile issues have been using ESWT to maintain their normal erections.

Anecdotal reports mention that patients without significant erectile dysfunction can report better, stronger and longer erections after undergoing ESWT.

The hypothesis behind it is that the body’s repair process maintains the function of the erectile tissues and blood vessels, mitigating degeneration over time.

Are There Any Side Effects?

As ESWT is a non-invasive procedure, it is appealing for people who want to minimize taking of medications and avoid the side effects associated with it.

Lots of new research and reviews are being done to validate ESWT as a new modality of treatment of these conditions.
