Pearly Penile Papules
Had rough bumps around your penis for the longest time? Not sure if they’re normal or an infection and it’s stressing you out?
They’re most probably just Pearly Penile Papules.
What are Pearly Penile Papules (PPP)?
Pearly penile papules are small dome-shaped or projection like bumps that are located just below the head of the penis. They are usually arranged circumferentially and they have the same colour as your skin.
Pearly penile papules are actually a normal variant of the penile anatomy. Although they are often mistaken as sexually transmitted lesions. These bumps are present since young. They are not a disease, cancer risks or abnormality. They are just harmless bumps that occur in some men.
They are quite common. Around 38% of men under 25 have them. However, only 11% of men above 50 have them. So they tend to regress with age.
PPP is more common among uncircumcised men compared to circumcised men. 42% of uncircumcised men have it compared to 27% of those who are circumcised.
How to tell if the Penile Bumps are harmless?
Pearly Penile Papules (PPP) and Genital Warts
Many men mistake PPP for genital warts. Warts are flesh coloured cauliflower-like growths that are transmitted sexually and are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). PPP are smaller, are more neatly arranged and not so dried out in appearance.
PPP also don’t grow larger, don’t just grow in one particular spot, and they don’t cause any pain or itch.
PPP is harmless to you and also harmless to your partners. It is not an STD (Sexually transmitted disease). There is no risk of transmitting it to others.
But I still want to remove them!
Pearly Penile Papules Removal
For some men, they still find it unsightly and would prefer them to be removed. Some of the effective ways to remove them include carbon dioxide laser and electrosurgery.
At Dr Tan & Partners, we provide treatment for Pearly Penile Papules (PPP) using electrosurgery.
Before starting, our doctor will examine you to make sure that they are truly PPP and not other lesions.
Then, he will apply a numbing cream on the area with PPP and leave it on a few minutes.
Once the area is numb, the doctor will use a machine that will gently burn off the PPP with a heated metal tip.
The process itself is painless and will only take about 15-20minutes.
Healing is also very quick and most patients recover within a week.
There may be a risk of recurrence but it is very rare.
PPP Removal is available in our clinics. Do contact us for an appointment if you are interested.
