Pearly Penile Papules (PPP)

Pearly penile papules (PPP) are small dome-shaped or projection like bumps that are located just below the head of the penis. They are usually arranged circumferentially and they have the same colour as your skin.

Pearly penile papules are actually a normal variant of the penile anatomy. Although they are often mistaken as sexually transmitted lesions. These bumps are present from young.

They are not a disease, or have any cancer risks or abnormalities. PPPs are just harmless bumps that occur in some men.

HOW TO TELL IF THE PENILE BUMPS ARE HARMLESS?

  • Around 38% of men under 25 have PPP

  • Only 11% of men above 50 have PPP

  • PPP tends to regress with age

PEARLY PENILE PAPULES (PPP) AND GENITAL WARTS

Many men mistake PPP for genital warts.

Genital warts are flesh coloured cauliflower-like growths that are transmitted sexually and are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). PPP are smaller, are more neatly arranged and not so dried out in appearance.

PPPs do not grow larger, they just grow in one particular spot, and they do not cause any pain or itching. PPP is harmless to you and also harmless to your partners. It is not an STD(Sexually transmitted disease)/ STI (Sexually transmitted infection). There is no risk of transmitting this to others.

Genital warts, on the other hand, are contagious and sexually transmitted, it is an STD. STD/STI screening and treatment is highly recommended for genital warts.

PEARLY PENILE PAPULES REMOVAL

PPP is more commonly seen amongst uncircumcised men compared to circumcised men. 42% of uncircumcised men have it compared to 27% of those who are circumcised.

PPP REMOVAL OPTIONS

Effective ways to remove pearly penile papules (PPP) include carbon dioxide laser and electrosurgery.

At Dr Tan & Partners, we provide treatment for Pearly Penile Papules (PPP) using electrosurgery.

PPP REMOVAL PROCEDURE

Before starting, our doctor will examine you to make sure that the bumps are truly PPP and not other lesions. The doctor will then apply a numbing cream on the area with PPP and leave it on for a few minutes.

Once the area is numb, the doctor will use a machine that will gently burn off the PPP with a heated metal tip. The process itself is painless and will only take about 15 – 20 minutes.

Healing is also very quick and most patients recover within a week. There may be a risk of recurrence but it is very rare.

Anywhere from 1 to 23 % of men between the ages of 40 and 70 are estimated to be affected.
