Thalassaemia Screen (Genetic blood disorder)

If both parents are Thalassaemia carriers ( Thal trait/minor), there will be a 25% chance of having a child with Thalassaemia major, which is a severe form of anaemia that may require blood transfusion and potentially have reduced life expectancy.

These 3 diseases can be sexually transmitted and passed on to the unborn baby, which can result in very serious health consequences.

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea screening – vaginal swab (women) or urine test (men)

Both these infections are sexually transmitted. Most patients do not show any symptoms, especially women. Untreated chlamydia and gonorrhoea can cause chronic scarring of the Fallopian Tubes, which affects implantation and chances of getting pregnant.

Hence, screening for chlamydia and gonorrhoea for both men and women is important in preventing STD-related infertility.

Rubella

Rubella is a highly contagious virus that can increase the risk of congenital abnormalities in the developing baby (fetus), miscarriage and stillbirth. If rubella antibody is undetectable, the vaccine should be given prior to pregnancy to provide immunization and protection to the fetus.
