COVID-19 is a disease caused by the virus known as SARS-CoV-2. It was first reported in China in December 2019 and developed quickly into a global pandemic.

There are 2 kinds of test for COVID-19

1. PCR Test

This PCR test is done by swabbing the back of the throat and/or the back of the nose.

It detects patients with an active ongoing infection with COVID-19. Patients who test positive on the PCR test are often hospitalized or isolated as they are likely to be contagious.

This is the test done in hospitals and for screening for COVID-19 infection. We do NOT offer this test.

It is highly accurate during the first 7 days of getting the infection as there is a high amount of virus during the initial stage of the infection.

But in the later stage of the infection, the amount of virus will be much lower and thus the test may no longer be able to detect it.

2. Antibody Test – (Rapid COVID-19 Testing)

(Available at selected DTAP Clinics)

This is a test for antibodies that patients developed after they have been infected with COVID-19.

This test does NOT show the presence of an active ongoing infection.

This test CANNOT be used to screen for patients currently infected with COVID-19.

Patients who test positive on this antibody test likely have been infected with COVID-19 in the past.

This test also does NOT indicate if you are truly immune to subsequent infection by the same virus, i.e it does NOT prove that you are immune to the virus.

How is the Rapid COVID-19 test for antibody is conducted?

A few drops of blood is required for this test. We will perform a simple and painless finger prick to obtain a single drop of blood. The blood is transferred to the testing device. Results are available in about 15 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The test tests for the presence of antibodies to COVID-19 (SARS-COV-2).

No. This is because even if you are currently infected, it may take at least 2-3 weeks after the infection for sufficient antibodies to be produced for the test to become positive.

If you have symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 or have been exposed to COVID-19 you will need a PCR test.

Unfortunately not. Scientists have yet to determine if the antibodies to COVID-19 (SARS-COV-2) are neutralizing antibodies or not.

In other words, having antibodies to COVID-19 does not mean that you are immune.

However, there is much research into this area and our understanding may change.

Unfortunately not. Scientists still do not know if having the antibodies to COVID-19 makes an individual immune to reinfection or not.

So the result of the antibody test cannot be used as an Immunity Passport for now.

No, it does not. Having antibodies to COVID-19 does not mean you are having an active ongoing infection and consequently may not mean you are contagious. To determine this, you would need a COVID-19 PCR test.

A single drop of blood from a finger prick is all that is needed to conduct the test.

The actual conduct of the test takes about 15 minutes.

No. This test can be done at any time. You do not need to fast for the test. Taking regular chronic medications (for high blood pressure, diabetes etc), taking antibiotics and taking dietary supplements have not been shown to affect the accuracy of the test.

This test has been approved by HSA for use in Singapore.
