This is a new STD Herpes Testing offered by DTAP Clinics that offer rapid (next working day) and accurate testing for Herpes Simples Virus 1 and 2 (HSV 1 and HSV 2) concurrently which are the cause of oral herpes and genital herpes. It detects both the virus from samples taken from the blisters and ulcers using PCR technology similar to that used in diagnosis of COVID-19.
Diagnosis of active herpes infection previously takes more than 1 week for the results to be available and as a result treatment may be delayed. With this rapid test now available, you can be diagnosed with herpes by next working day and you can start on treatment earlier and suffer less.
This is different from the usual HSV 1 and HSV 2 antibody blood test which may not accurately tell you whether the blisters/ ulcers you have are due to HSV 1/2.

What does the Rapid Herpes Test for?
The Rapid Herpes Simplex Virus 1/2 test for the presence of the virus DNA in the blisters and ulcers.
The test detects both HSV 1 and 2 at the same time and can differentiate them.

What is Herpes Simplex Virus?
Traditionally, HSV 1 (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1) is commonly known as oral herpes while HSV 2 (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2) causes genital herpes. However, due to changing sexual practices this is no longer true.
You can still get HSV 2 in the mouth via oral sex and similarly, you can get HSV 1 in the genitalia through oral sex.
Both HSV 1 and HSV 2 causes painful blisters and ulcers. Usually, there are more than 1 blister or ulcers. In some people, the symptoms can be very mild and they may not think they have been infected with herpes as they may have mistaken it for pimples, or the blisters or ulcers last for a just few days before disappearing.
However, that does not mean that the virus is no longer present.
Similar to the chickenpox virus, it can hide in your body for a period of time with no symptoms and can cause flare ups later on when your immune system is low.

How is this Rapid Herpes Simplex Virus Test different from other tests?
Blood test for HSV only detects the antibodies to the virus and may not reflect that the current symptoms is due to HSV as in majority of cases, once a person has been infected with HSV 1/2, the antibodies may remain positive for life. The Rapid HSV test offered by Dr Tan and Partners detects for the DNA of the HSV 1/2 virus using PCR which is accurate and rapid.

Besides HSV, what are the other common STDs?
The 2 most common STDs in the world are Chlamydia and gonorrhoea which Dr Tan and Partners also offers rapid testing for. In addition, other STDs to consider are Syphilis, Trichomoniasis, HPV and HIV.
How long does it take for the results to be available?
Typically, results for the rapid HSV 1/2 test will be available next working day.
How accurate is the test?
It is 95-97% accurate.
Which areas of the body can the test be used for?
The doctor will usually need to take the fluid and the bottom of the blisters/ ulcers from any part body using a cotton swab.
Do I need to prepare anything to do the test?
There is no preparation to do for the test except do NOT apply any creams or powder to the area 24 hours prior to the test.
Is it painful?
No. Most patients report no to little pain during and after the test.
Are there any vaccinations available for HSV?
Unfortunately at this point in time, there is no available vaccine for HSV. However, there are several Herpes Simplex Virus vaccines being researched.
