Rapid Trichomonas Testing
Trichomonas vaginalis is a sexually transmitted disease which affects both males and females. Globally, WHO estimates that there are more than 200 million infections in 2015 which makes it one of the most prevalent non-viral sexually transmitted diseases.
It has been associated with increased risk of HIV infection by 2-3 times. It can also cause infertility in males and can result in pre-term birth for pregnant women. Importantly in majority of infection, both males and females have no symptoms. Thus, resulting in transmitting the infection to your partner unknowingly.
How do I know if I have been infected with Trichomonas vaginalis?
In most cases you do not have any symptoms that shows that you have been infected. If you do have symptoms, you may experience the following:
|Itchiness inside the penis||Vaginal discharge that might be watery, smelly, or yellow-green|
|Discomfort or pain when you pass urine||Vulvar itchiness|
|Discharges from the penis|
Traditionally, lab tests for Trichomonas may miss a significant proportion of infections as the tests are not very sensitive. Depending on the test that is used by the lab the sensitivity of picking up the infection can range from 30-60%. It may take up to 3-5 days for results to be available.
Which is why at Dr Tan and Partners , we are introducing a new Trichomonas vaginalis test that is more sensitive than many of the tests that are offered currently. It uses real-time PCR (nucleic acid) to detect the organism.
|Microscopy||Fast (same day)||Not sensitive (30-50%);|
|Culture||Sensitivity about 70%||Takes up to 7 days|
|Non-PCR test||Sensitivity 60-80%||Some of the tests cannot be used to test in males;|
Expensive compared to microscopy and culture
Used at DTAP Clinics
|Very Sensitive: 90-97%|
Able to test for both males and females;
Fast results: next working day
|About the same cost as non-PCR test|
What is required for the test?
For females with symptoms: A Swab inside the vaginal (similar to what is done for pap smear); no pain
For females without symptoms: A Swab inside the vaginal or urine
For males: Urine
For those taking the urine test, we recommend that you do not visit the toilet to pass urine 2 hours before doing the urine test.
(This will be determined by your doctor after the assessment)
