What is Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Infection?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infections are so common that nearly all men and women will get at least one type of HPV at some point in their lives.
Most people never know that they have been infected and may give HPV to a sex partner without knowing it.
There are more than 150 strains of HPV viruses.
HPV infections can cause:
- cancers of the cervix, vagina, and vulva in women;
- cancers of the penis in men; and
- cancers of the anus and back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils (oropharynx), in both women and men.
The group of HPV that may cause cancer is generally referred to as high-risk HPV group. In many cases, it takes decades after the initial infection with the high-risk HPV group before cancer develops and mentioned previously, most people do not know that they have been infected as there are usually no symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How is this Rapid HPV Test different from others?
With most clinics, HPV test results are only available after 3-7 working days. These real-time PCR Rapid HPV test results are available by next working day.
Should I get tested?
As most people who are infected do not have any symptoms, you may have been infected without knowing it and you may transmit it to your sexual partners. Testing is recommended especially for the women who are sexually active and men who engage in sex with men.
Do I need to prepare anything before doing the test?
No. All that is required is that the doctor will use a brush to collect some cells from the cervix of women or cells from the area of the penis in men or cells from the anus of both sexes.
For women, you can also opt to do a pap smear together with the same test. So you do not need to be subjected to 2 separate procedures as the same brush can be used to send for both tests.
Is it painful?
Generally it is a painless procedure to take the samples as we are just brushing the surface of the sample areas.
