Abnormal Vaginal Discharge – Colour, Consistency, Smell Or Volume

Every female has a normal vaginal discharge which will vary in consistency, colour and amount throughout your menstrual cycle.

However, there are times when deviations from your normal vaginal discharge may be a sign of infection.

What are the Causes of Abnormal Vaginal Discharge?

Vaginal infections can be sexually transmitted or non-sexually transmitted.


a) Non-Sexually Transmitted

The most common vaginal infections leading to abnormal vaginal discharge in women are non-sexually transmitted.

Bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections are the top two vaginal infections in women worldwide.

b) Non-Sexually Transmitted

However, if you have had an unprotected sexual exposure, sexually transmitted infections may be the cause of your abnormal vaginal discharge.


Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are two of the most common sexually transmitted infections that present with abnormal discharge. Diagnosis & Treatment

Your doctor will speak to you further about your abnormal vaginal discharge. When your doctor examines you, a swab test may be done in order to confirm the cause of your abnormal vaginal discharge.

Treatment of abnormal vaginal discharge is targeted at the underlying infection. It may come in the form of oral medications, topical creams or pessaries which are inserted into the vaginal canal.
