Contraception & Family Planning

Contraception, or birth control, involves the prevention of unintended pregnancies. Our clinics offer a comprehensive range of contraceptive methods to cater to different needs. These include the combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP), the hormonal patch (Evra), the contraception injection, intrauterine devices (IUD insertion and removal) and the hormonal implant (insertion and removal).

Choosing the best birth control method depends on your needs and the consultation with your doctor will deal with the duration of birth control you require, the side effects of the various contraception methods and will be individualised accordingly.

Emergency contraception or the morning after pill/emergency pill (Postinor 2 and Ella) is also available at our clinics and can be taken shortly after unprotected intercourse to prevent pregnancy.

Women’s Fertility & Pregnancy

Fertility screening is recommended for couples who intend to start a family or who have been trying for some time with no success yet. We also offer premarital screening as well. Couple fertility screening begins with a detailed consultation and involves tests for both partners. These tests include semen analysis tests, hormonal blood tests and ultrasound scans. Infertility treatment in the form of various medications to boost male and female fertility are available as well.
Pre-conception screening involves tests to ensure a woman is healthy, infection-free and ready for pregnancy.

Vaginismus (Vaginal Tightness)

Vaginismus is a specific condition in which a woman encounters pain during attempted vaginal penetration, most commonly manifesting as painful sexual intercourse or even the inability to have sexual intercourse due to pain. Vaginismus is due to involuntary pelvic muscle spasms. The diagnosis of vaginismus involves a detailed consultation and physical examination and tests to ensure there are no underlying infections or structural problems causing painful penetration.

Treatment of vaginismus is complex and involves addressing the physical as well as psychosexual aspect. Our clinics employ a multifaceted approach involving sexual counselling, and desensitisation techniques, pelvic floor retraining and the use of vaginal dilators.

Female STD Screening & Treatment

Our clinic offers comprehensive women’s sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) testing. Sexually transmitted infections may be contracted through oral intercourse as well as penetrative sexual intercourse, with the highest risk of transmission associated with unprotected sexual intercourse. In women, comprehensive STD screening involves both blood STD tests as well as vaginal STD testing in the form of a high vaginal or endocervical swab test.

Vaginal STDs may give rise to abnormal vaginal discharge, vaginal itching, vaginal odour, abnormal vaginal bleeding (post coital bleeding- bleeding after sex, or intermenstrual bleeding- spotting when not on your period). More severe infections like pelvic inflammatory disease may cause abdominal pain and fever and can even lead to infertility. Some women with STDs may, however, remain asymptomatic. Testing is thus recommended as long as you have had any sexual exposure you are worried about.

Blood STD testing is similar for both males and females and covers infections including HIV, Hepatitis infections, syphilis and Herpes. Anonymous HIV testing is available at our Robertson Walk clinic.

Vaginal Health

Vaginal health issues can affect women of all ages, regardless of whether they are sexually active or not. These problems can range from vaginal infections to vaginal lumps and bumps or vaginal growths, vaginal ulcers, as well as vaginal dryness or painful intercourse (dyspareunia).

Vaginitis is when there is an infection of the vaginal canal, which often manifests as abnormal vaginal discharge, vaginal itching, vaginal soreness, an abnormal vaginal odour, or even postcoital bleeding (bleeding after intercourse), or spotting (bleeding in between periods). The causes of vaginal infections can be non-sexually transmitted such as yeast infections or sexually transmitted like chlamydia and gonorrhoea, with symptoms of abnormal vaginal discharge that can ultimately lead to more serious complications like a pelvic inflammatory disease. Vaginal lumps and bumps or abnormal vaginal growths may be due to benign causes like vulval cysts or vaginal cysts, infections such as vaginal warts, molluscum contagiosum, or more malignant causes like vulva cancer or vaginal cancer. Diagnosis of vaginal lumps and bumps is usually done clinically although sometimes a biopsy may be required. Treatment of vaginal growths depends on the underlying cause.

Genital ulcers can be extremely painful and distressing and are most commonly due to infections like genital Herpes, which can cause recurrent ulcers.

Vaginal pain during intercourse or painful sex can be due to a variety of reasons and treatment may vary accordingly.

Period & Menstrual Issues

Menstrual problems are one of the most common female health issues and can be extremely troubling. A normal menstrual cycle should be regular. Menstrual cycle problems may manifest as irregular periods, delayed periods, less or even no periods at all (oligomenorrhea or amenorrhoea). Heavy periods or painful periods which are often dismissed as normal can also be a sign of an underlying medical condition.

Investigation of menstrual issues begins with a detailed history taking by your doctor about the pattern of your menstrual cycle. In some cases, additional blood tests, hormone tests, and ultrasound scans may be required.

The aim of treating menstrual problems is to identify any underlying medical condition and to achieve a regular, manageable menstrual cycle.

Female Cancer Screening & Vaccination

In accordance with national cancer screening guidelines, female cancer screening involves both breast cancer screening and cervical cancer screening.

Breast cancer screening in the form of a mammogram is recommended for women from the age of 50 although earlier screening may be recommended in women with a family history of breast cancer or related cancers. Any abnormal breast lumps, breast pain or abnormal nipple discharge may also warrant investigations such as breast ultrasound, even in a younger individual.

Cervical cancer screening in the form of a PAP smear is recommended for all sexually active females after the age of 25. The chief risk factor for cervical cancer is the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection. High-risk HPV testing is available in conjunction with your routine PAP smear. An abnormal PAP smear may require further testing before treatment decisions can be made.

The HPV vaccine offers protection against high risk, cervical cancer-causing strains of HPV. While it is best to get the vaccine before you have begun being sexually active, women who are already sexually active, or who have had an HPV infection/abnormal PAP smear/genital warts can still get the vaccine.

Women’s Urinary Issues

Urine tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common urinary issues encountered in women. Symptoms of a urine tract infection include painful urination, foul-smelling urine, blood in the urine (hematuria), and increased urinary frequency and urgency.

Common triggers leading to a UTI include sexual intercourse and dehydration. Urine tests may be done to confirm a UTI. Most UTIs are not serious and treatment of an uncomplicated UTI involves antibiotics. Recurrent UTIs may require additional testing. In rare cases, if there is a suggestion of a more serious infection affecting the upper urinary tract or kidneys (pyelonephritis), your doctor will advise you further on a possible investigation and urgent treatment.
